Vladimir Stepanov
about the artist
The renowned Soviet/Russian cartoon drawer Vladimir Stepanov was born in 1951. In 1978, after graduating from the Novosibirsk Electric Engineering Institute, Vladimir started his career first as colour correction artist and later as illustrator at the editorial offices of various Novosibirsk newspapers.
Stepanov’s art blends the visual and the intellectual in the artist’s signature succinct manner. Although his medium of choice is drawing, occasionally he creates etchings and, quite rarely, paintings. His recurring themes are illusions of the mind, deconstruction of the myths of progress, freedom, and historical evolution, existential dead-ends, and relativity of many common truths.
