Aleksey Shtern

Stage director, set designer, painter, actor and teacher Aleksey Shtern was born in 1942 in Kazan, consecutively graduating from the School of Painting of the Kharkov Art Institute and the Directing Department of the Moscow Art Theatre School. He currently lives and works in St. Petersburg.

Shtern’s creative practice blends theatrical vividness of imagery with the artist’s signature technique, involving three-dimensional oil on canvas painting with elements of collage that sees his characters step beyond the pictorial plane both metaphorically and literally.
