Vladimir Shinkaryov

Artist, writer, one of the founders and masterminds of the Mitki movement, Vladimir was born in 1954 in Leningrad and attended classes under the auspices of the Vera Mukhina Leningrad Higher School of Art and Design and the Repin Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. The artist lived and worked in St. Petersburg.

Mostly painting in series, Shinkaryov preferred grey, blue, and yellow-brown tones. The artist described the muted palette of his paintings as the colours of insurgency against currently prevalent trends. In the simplest of scenes he managed to capture something timeless, chthonic, mysterious, which turned his art into an almost esoteric practice.

Vladimir Shinkaryov passed away on 19 April 2026.
