Marina Medovikova
Born in Leningrad in 1952, Marina Medovikova graduated from the Painting Department of the Repin Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (class of Evsey Moiseyenko).
According to the artist, most subjects of her works originate in her own childhood and youth. The motifs of a black horse, pensive children in colourful clothing, a subway, an ant hill, musical instruments, a tiny mirror, and patches of sunlight are endlessly recurring throughout her oeuvre. They all stem from vivid impressions – books, games, an unexpected encounter with a gypsy family, and other early-life experiences. At the heart of her art is always a human being, whose emotions, mysteries, whimsies and the inner world she explores. The artist never stops working, calling her painting practice an ‘ailment’ and feeling the need to capture every day at least in a couple of strokes on canvas.
