Dmitry Provotorov

Born in 1975 in Leningrad, Dmitry graduated from the School of Cinematography of the Leningrad Institute of Cinema Engineering (presently the St. Petersburg State Institute of Cinema and Television).

The St. Petersburg-based experimental photographer Dmitry Provotorov has spent more than 15 years working in analogue black and white photography, using traditional methods of manual photographic processing and printing and trying different formats and forms, colours and halftones, images and models, film negative and print surfaces, techniques and approaches to realising his creative vision. Treating art photography as the preferred medium for communicating his artistic message, he nevertheless works like a sculptor, carving and modelling the snapshot to achieve a handmade image, creating unique and poignantly anachronistic visions.
