Andrey Filippov
about the artist
A charismatic figure in the contemporary Russian art scene and a prominent representative of the new wave of Moscow Conceptualism, Andrey Filippov was born in 1959. In the late 1980s, he took part in the first international exhibitions of cutting-edge Soviet art. The artist was enthusiastically absorbed in playing with meanings, redefining and fusing landscapes, conventionalised ‘Russian’ and Soviet paraphernalia, religious dogmata, catchphrases popular in the USSR, and his own texts. Central to his oeuvre is the reinvention of the 16th-century concept of ‘Moscow as the third Rome.’
Andrey Filippov passed away in July 2022.
