Dmitry Bulnygin

about the artist

Born in Novosibirsk in 1965, Dmitry Bulnygin graduated from the Novosibirsk Architectural Institute. Member of the Blue Noses Group between 1999 and 2004, the artist has been at the helm of the International Extra Short Film Festival (ESF) since 2000. Dmitry currently lives and works between Moscow and Paris.

Trained as an architect, Bulnygin started his artistic career as painter, later transitioning into sculpture and installation art. Since the late 1990s, he has been venturing into new media technologies and video art production. Dmitry Bulnygin’s works explore the various uses of video as a creative tool, from documentaries to large-scale multimedia installations. The artist believes that, within the realm existing between reality and phantasmagoria, video is capable of starting a dialogue between art objects, photography, installations and urban environment. The irony inherently present in his works often escalates into social critique. One of Bulnygin’s recurring themes is the juxtaposition of nature and the non-organic structures and environments devised by men.
