Olga Boldyreff

about the artist

Olga Boldyreff was born in 1957 in Nantes, France, into a family of Russian emigrants. Perceiving herself as neither quite French nor fully Russian, the artist delves into the subject of interspacial connections in search of possible meeting points between the French and Russian cultures as well as her own family’s past and present.

Boldyreff works across media, creating knitwear installations, murals, etchings and lithographs that she stitches through with thread. Exploring the interconnection of different artistic practices, the artist revisits folk art forms, in particular the knitting craft traditional for many European cultures that she uses as a metaphor. The symbol of thread recurring throughout her oeuvre stands for the connecting line joining the disparate and ambivalent into a harmonious whole.
