Alexander Savko

Alexander was born in 1957 in Bendery, Moldavian SSR, and studied stage design at the Odessa Theatre and Design College.

A prominent artist of the Moscow underground scene of the 1980s and 90s, Savko juxtaposes the classical masterpieces of the Russian and world painting tradition with the characters of western cartoons and animated films. These incongruous combinations illustrate the themes of mass culture appropriation and reduction of iconic artworks to featureless emblems.
