Anatoliy Alekseyev
Anatoliy Alekseyev was born in Leningrad in 1951 and graduated from the School of Painting of the Repin Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (class of Andrey Mylnikov). The artist lived and worked in St. Petersburg. For many years Alekseyev taught drawing and composition at the Boris Ioganson Art School. The artist passed away on 12 July 2021.
Anatoliy Alekseyev’s artworks are arrestingly dramatic: the sky in his landscapes is always ablaze, while the characters of his fantasy-themed canvases are struggling with devastating elements. Combining the academic art training tradition with his own understanding of visual language, Alekseyev discovered his trademark style (dubbed by the artist himself as ‘erotic intellectual realism’), monumental not in outward form, but in its inner core.
