Bolin Liu
about the artist
Contemporary Chinese artist Liu Bolin, often referred to as ‘the invisible man,’ was born in 1973 and rose to fame as the creator of photographic self-portraits in which he is disguised to fully blend with his surroundings.
Liu’s creative practice bridges various genres and media, including sculpture, performance art, and photography. His images usually expose various social issues and have detailed backstories. Their visual sameness is illusory, as they always have different conceptual underpinnings. The actual meaning of photographs and performance pieces becomes apparent upon closer inquiry into the background of a certain location or event.
