Erarta presents IV International Short Film Festival at Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art.

/

Erarta MOTION PICTURES was designed and implemented in 2013 by the Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art, the largest museum of contemporary art in Russia. Since then it’s been annually held in March. The festival organizers regularly select new films dedicated to painting and visual arts.

At the beginning of its history, Erarta MOTION PICTURES concentrated mainly on films where painting, artists and artistic practices were the main targets of research. However, the experience has shown that there is a huge amount of incredibly interesting films, that not really talk about painting, but rather use its laws, techniques and angle of view as the prime semantic and form-making principles. And it is not surprising, since cinematography is the direct successor of visual arts by its definition. The successor with a wide arsenal of latest technological capacities to bring the pictures in motion. The vital energy of “beautiful cinema” encouraged the organizers to change the original slogan from “Cinema about Painting" to “Cinema as Painting”.

Thus, the festival features not only stories about artists and artworks, but also films- landscapes, films-portraits, films-dedications; art documentaries and explorations of canvas textures; films-essays about the image nature, and films-experiments drawn on a blackboard or scratched on a film negative.

The festival Erarta MOTION PICTURES actively supports the emerging trend of deemphasizing the artist’s role in an artwork creating. Today — just like in times of Renaissance — the artist is allowed to go beyond the boundaries of his specialization. He is no longer determined by one profession, since his occupation is subordinated directly to the project he is currently working on. Today, he is a poet, tomorrow — an architect and a philosopher, and the day after — a musician and a director. The festival features a lot of films where a director turns into an artist, or an artist takes a camera as the new visual instrument. The frames are erased, the frontiers are cancelled. Visas for travelling from one creative area to another are no longer needed.

Each year Erarta MOTION PICTURES extend both genre and geographical boundaries. More and more authors from all over the world join the project. Since its foundation the festival has shown films from Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Spain, Italy, Colombia, Mexico, USA, UK and many other countries. This year the selection committee has already received more than 600 applications. The competition program will include 22 films from Finland, Norway, Estonia, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, Israel, Colombia, Russia, Great Britain, Canada, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia.

The Festival jury is traditionally represented by two committees — The jury of Artists and The Jury of Filmmakers. Over the history of the festival the jury included such artists and directors as Alexander Sokurov, Konstantin Bronzit, Anatoly Belkin, Vladimir Shinkarev, Anton Adasinsky, Ari Ergis Magnusson, Jukka-Pekka Laakso, Carmen Gray, Charlene Dinhat, Sergio Oxman, Nikolai Kopeikin and others.

Along with the competition films the screenings at Erarta Museum will also feature the bright and talented participants of the non-competitive programs.

The world is a big moving picture. Erarta MOTION PICTURES is a bright, precise and modern way to depict and get to know it better.
